Memory training

Memory training consists on remembering few elements presented on semaphores, making a particular calculation and choosing the correct answer by covering semaphore. For example, there are presented numbers on three semaphores. Athlete has to remember them and add up during the exercise. At the end of exercise he chooses one of three semaphores which shows a correct answer.

It is recommended to implement, between covering semaphores, sport specific tasks like passing or throwing the ball. It will make the exercise more difficult but also more effective.

Memory exercises are used in short-term and working memory training. What is more, athlete learns   good decision making with time pressure, basing on previously seen information.

While creating a Memory exercise we can change it’s difficulty level using following modifications:

  • Disturbing sounds – using additional sounds will influence difficulty of remembering presented symbols,
  • Calculation change – we can implement various calculations like adding up,
  • Symbols – instead numbers, we can use other abstract symbols which make task more difficult,
  • Colours – by using different colours we can indicate which numbers are positive (green) and which negative (red).

Return training

Return training is based on covering semaphores in two positions. In the simplest version of exercise, athlete stands opposite a single semaphore, remembers presented symbol and covers the semaphore, then he turns around and searches for remembered symbol among other semaphores.

The aim of return exercises is practicing wide and narrow attention.  At the beginning,  athlete focuses on one particular element (narrow attention) and then makes overview of the field (wide attention). It is a perfect exercise for team sport athletes, where effective switching between different types of attention is a vital element of competition.

According to our training goals, we can change return exercises, so they would adjust athlete’s skills or different sport competitions.

Elements which may be manipulated:

  • Number of semaphores in the sequence – by adding semaphores in first sequence, we enhance difficulty of exercise. Athlete must remember more symbols and their order and in the same time perform a motor task (covering semaphores). In this exercise we train not only attention but also short-time memory,
  • Semaphores setting – semaphores may be arbitrarily set in space, so we could grade difficulty of wide attention exercise,
  • Distracting sounds – attention of athlete may be easily disturbed. Use diffusing sounds to become insensitive for distractors.
  • Daltonic background – using daltonic background makes finding a good symbol much more difficult and encourages athlete to focus more on the exercise.
  • Exposition time – we can manipulate with exposition time of symbols on semaphores. Thanks to it athlete will be forced to make decision with time pressure. He can also perform freely without bothering about time.

By using mentioned methods, we can implement various exercises, which help athletes to constantly develop their skills.

Unboxing- first episode of tech- series

Tennis- anticipation exercise


Exercise develops ability to observe movements of opponent and quickly draw conclusions. Thanks to it athlete will be able to easily predict strikes of opponent and take advantage over him.


After activating “Anticipation” training cover semaphore with presented symbol. Then symbols will be presented on three semaphores – these are semaphores assigned to athlete. Three others are assigned to coach.

Athlete and coach stand opposite each other. In front of them are located assigned semaphores.


Each semaphore on coach’s side is connected to particular semaphore on athlete’s side. Athlete by observing movements of coach learns the rule. After a while he is able to react faster only by seeing movements of coach.


  1. Coach starts the exercise by covering first semaphore with symbol “X”
  2. Athlete tries his luck and searches for correct semaphore.
  3. After covering the right semaphore symbols “X” on the athlete’s side disappear.
  4. Coach covers next semaphore.
  5. Athlete uses information from previous step and tries to find correct semaphore.
  6. When athlete will learn the whole rule, we can randomly change position of semaphores.


When predicting actions of opponent we have to focus on few elements at the same time. Adding different symbols on the semaphores will help to fully prepare our brain to anticipation on the court.

Tennis- wide& narrow attention excercise


This exercise will develop wide and narrow attention, which is ability to instantly switch between observing one important element and few elements on wide field.



After activating „Attention” training, there will be presented „X” symbol on one of the semaphores. Put this semaphore in the middle of center service line. Cover „X” semaphore. In next step there will appear symbols on five other semaphores. Among them, one symbol will be presented twice. Cover one of those two semaphores. The one which doesn’t react for movement – put in the middle of the net. Other semaphores (4) should be put in outside corners of service boxes.


  1. Athlete starts exercise behind the service line, runs and covers semaphore „X”.
  2. Semaphore on the net shows symbol, which should be found by athlete on other semaphores in corners.
  3. Athlete covers found semaphore.
  4. Athlete returns and covers semaphore „X” on the center service line.
  5. Next steps of exercise should be performed similarly


Tennis is a game where concentration of athlete may be easily disturbed. Turning on disturbing sounds in application will allow to train more effecitvely.

Tennis- memory exercise


This exercise is used for effective memory training. Thanks to it an athletete will be able to memorize more important information during the game, which allows to make fast and good decisions.


After activating „Memory” training, there will appear number on one of the semaphores. Cover this semaphore, find next one with presented number and repeat this action once again. Those three semaphores should be set in following places:

– baseline, left side,

– between service line and baseline, middle,

– deuce service box.

Put three other semaphores on the net (right doubles alley).


Numbers on semaphores may be presented in two colours:

– red – negative numbers,

– green – positive numbers.

The aim of the exercise is to add up all of the numbers on three mentionded semaphores. At the end of exercise athlete has to choose on of three semaphores with correct score.

Realization :

  1. Player begins exercise behind baseline (left doubles alley).
  2. Player covers first semaphore on the baseline.
  3. Player executes a strike.
  4. Player covers second semaphore.
  5. Player executes second strike.
  6. Player covers third semaphore.
  7. Player goes to the net and hits a volley.
  8. Player goes to the right doubles alley and covers one of three semaphores on the net.


Working with numbers gives us countless posibilities of grading difficulty level. Using multiplication and division will provide better results.

Role of memory in sports

Memory is one of the most interesting abilities in sport. It works in an exceptional way by making a base for growth of other skills, like effective decision making or anticipation. Despite obvious advantages of memory training it is still rarely seen among athletes. Knowing this fact, we can use it to be a step ahead of others!

Memory game

Sports commentators often use phrase „memory game”. It is a type o play, when athlete memebrs setting of players, so in few seconds he could use a trained schema.  Thanks to remembered information an athelte is able to predict where to find his teammate. This is nothing else but result of effective memory training, which gives us advantage with element of suprise and very fast actions.

 How memory works

We can distinguish four basic types of memory:

  • sensory memory – which briefly holds information from our senses
    (max. 0,5 s.),
  • short-term memory – which holds small amount on information for a short time, like players setting on the pitch,
  • working memory – which is used to process information,
  • long-term memory – which holds big amount of information, like knowledge how make a technicaly good strike.

When it comes to sports, the most interesting ones are short-term and working memory. Thanks to them we can make game changing decisions during the match. However, let’s remember that all of mentioned types work together, creating unity.

How to train memory in sports?

Memory exercises  should be used in cyclic sport training. Keep in mind, that memorizing is not enough to get best effects. There should be additional, brain stimulating tasks, like arithmetic operations. They will engage working memory and unblock potential of other skills. It is very important to start memory training from young age, when athlete’s brain is most opened for new stimuli.
